Lotus to build its own Tesla, sort of

Although the Tesla Roadster shares only 7% of its parts with the Lotus Elise, anyone with just a basic interest in cars can see the similarities between the two autos. With that in mind, it may come as a surprise to many that Lotus wants to build their own electric sports car to compete against the Tesla Roadster and Fisker Karma. Lotus CEO Micheal Kimberley said in an interview with Financial Times that consumers should not be "surprised to see an electric Lotus shortly".

This is actually a convenient step for the sports car manufacturer, which has been looking into electric-powered motors—like the one in its 1997 Zytek Electric Elise concept—for the past ten years. Unlike the original electric Elise that had a range of approximately 100 miles, the new car will utilize a regular gas engine to expand its range to around 300 miles.

First Look: Lotus Evora

Lotus unveiled the Evora to an awaiting public at the British Motor Show today. The Lotus Evora, which was originally under the Project Eagle code name, is a 2+2 that will be powered by a Toyota-derived 3.5L V-6 producing 276 horsepower and 252 lb/ft of torque. The car will be the heaviest auto in the current Lotus line-up—weighing a little less than 3,000 lbs. However, don't be fooled into thinking the car is heavy; for most manufacturers the Evora would be their lightest car. The added weight is there for customer convenience. The Evora will have wider and taller door openings with a narrow sill to enable easier ingress and egress. The cabin itself is also bigger to help accommodate the large American male. Even with the added size and girth the Lotus Evora is capable of getting up to 60 mph from a standstill in under 5 seconds and will be able to reach somewhere near 160 mph. The Lotus Evora should be available in showrooms in spring of 2009. Look for more news as it becomes available.  More pictures can be found here
