Koenigsegg Agera R is the stop-and-go master

Koenigsegg Agera R

On September 2, 2011, the Koenigsegg Agera R set the current record in the Guinness World Records for the fastest time for a two-seater production car to travel 0–186–0 mph. The feat, conducted at an airfield near Angelholm, Sweden, was accomplished in 21.9 seconds by Robert Serwanski. Guinness World Records confirms that this is a new record, making Koenigsegg’s Agera R the first titleholder.

In addition, Koenigsegg attempted to set five other Guinness World Records. All the records were related to accelerating and decelerating at speeds between 186 and 200 mph:

• 0–186 mph = 14.53 seconds

• 0–200 mph = 17.68 seconds

• 186–0 mph = 6.66 seconds

• 200–0 mph = 7.28 seconds

• 0–200–0 mph = 24.96 seconds

For comparison, Bugatti says the 1,200-hp Veyron Super Sport takes 14.60 seconds to reach 186 mph from a standstill (0.07 of a second slower than the Agera R) and 22.5 seconds to go 0–186–0 mph (1.31 seconds slower than the Agera R).

The Koenigsegg is powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine that delivers a total of 1,115 hp on E85 bioethanol . Koenigsegg says the Agera R has a theoretical top speed of 275 mph. Christian von Koenigsegg was thrilled that the Agera R received this acknowledgement, stating, “We had high hopes when we set out to do this record. But, the end result was truly astonishing. This is Koenigsegg´s 4th Guinness World Record since 2003, and it shows our continued commitment to build hypercars that deliver beyond expectations.”

22-year old grabs first Aventador for extra $71,000

A 22-year-old engineering graduate, Dhiaa Al-Essa, became the first person in Saudi Arabia to take delivery of the new 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. To bypass the car’s 18-month waiting list, the youth reportedly paid an additional $71,000 on top of the car’s $387,000 base price. Obviously, Al-Essa is not tight on cash, which may have a lot to do with the £1.5-billion estimated worth of his family.

The Lamborghini is just one of many exotic supercars that Al-Essa owns, which looks like a laundry list of the latest and greatest and includes a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, Koenigsegg Agera, Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe, Rolls-Royce Phantom sedan, Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, Ferrari F430, Ferrari 599 GTO, Ferrari 458 Italia, Ferrari California, Porsche 997 GT3 RS, Porsche 997 Turbo Spyder, Bentley Continental GT, Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG, Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG, BMW M5, BMW X6M, BMW X5M, Audi R8, and Maybach 62. His collection has an estimated value of $12 million.

Which car does Al-Essa like the most? According to an article posted on Metro.co.uk in 2010 before he acquired at least the Koenigsegg and the Aventador, his favorite ride was the Mercedes SLR McLaren because of the way it looks and drives and its reliability.

duPont REGISTRY's auto magazine to feature $9 million worth of exotics for sale from one collection

The next issue of duPont REGISTRY A Buyers Gallery of Fine Automobiles will feature six ultra-exotics worth $9 million being offered from a single dealer. It’s not every day you can set your eyes on 4,500-plus horsepower and $9 million worth of cars huddled in a single room. Well, not unless you are creeping around the now-aging garage of the sultan of Brunei. The result of engineering triumphs from the world’s top minds, each car’s creation comes from a storied history and for a different purpose:

Racecar-derived

A street-legal version of a racecar of the same name, the 2000 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Super Sport is powered by an AMG-derived 7.3-liter V-12 producing 720 hp. This is number 17 of the 25 CLK GTRs and one of five upgraded to Super Sports trim. The car is titled in Florida and only has 1,492 miles on the odometer.

Designed for the track

An off-shoot of the Enzo but developed only for the track, this particular FXX was upgraded to Evolution trim by Ferrari’s racing division for Ferrari owners, Corse Clienti, in the fall of 2010. Since its return, the track-ready 2003 model has sat unused as one of only 35 FXX cars and 17 Evolutions in the world.

After the title of world’s fastest production car

Powered by an 806-hp 4.7-liter twin-supercharged V-8, the 2008 Koenigsegg CCX offered is one of 34 ever built and is in pristine condition with only 277 miles under its belt. A similar Koenigsegg CCR claimed the world’s fastest production car title in February 2005 but it wasn’t long before it was superseded by another car in the collection.

The Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 uses 8.0-liter W-16 quad-turbocharged engine and standard four-wheel drive to propel it to 60 mph from a standstill in 2.4 seconds and to a top speed of 253 mph, making it the world’s fastest production car in April 2005. With only 1,699 miles, this is one of 71 Veyrons produced in 2008.

An expression of Formula 1 know-how in a road-legal vehicle

Ferrari introduced the Enzo in 2002 featuring the latest Formula 1 technology. This 2003 model is Ferrari Classiche certified, is in pristine condition, and has only 3,413 miles. It includes full books, luggage, and up-to-date service records.

Example of extreme exclusivity, encompassing the brand’s entire technical and dynamic competence

Lamborghini introduced the Reventon for 2008 as an extreme Murcielago reformed into a limited edition masterpiece. Twenty of 20, this Reventon is like new and has never been owner driven. The car was stored in a private collection upon purchase and features only 68 delivery miles.

Separately, they stand as rolling pieces of technological art. Amassed, these special creations form a fantasy garage. The most common car was limited to 400 units, making a collection like this for sale in one place exponentially rarer than the cars alone. You can learn more about this exclusive set of vehicles in the pages of our magazine

How sexy is this?

Cars On 5th is a car show that takes place every year on 5th Avenue in Naples, Florida. Chris Grosser, a professional photographer and automotive enthusiast, was out there taking some breathtaking photographs. Amongst the many exotic cars that showed up at the 2011 Cars On 5th event: a Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita (one of only three in the world), a Lexus LFA (one of only 500 ever to be built and one of the few that have been already delivered), and an assortment of Lamborghinis and Ferraris. Check out ChrisGrosserPhotography.com for the entire album from the 2011 Cars On 5th show.

Is the Agera R the new CCXR?

Is the Agera R to the Agera what the CCXR is to the CCX? The first Agera R has reportedly been delivered to the Omani royal family and it is said that, like the CCXR, its 4.7-liter V-8 engine produces more power when running off E85 biofuel. When processing what you normally find at the pump, the Agera R produces the same 898 hp as the base Agera. Speculation is that that figure will approach 1,100 hp once the corn-based ethanol is added. The reasons behind the extra power lies in the fuel’s attributes. Because E85 fuel has a higher octane rating and cooling abilities, the engine can run with higher compression, boost pressure, and more spark advance compared to the normal gasoline-powered Agera. No word if the royal family of Oman will get the only Agera R or if it will be offered alongside the Agera in the Koenigsegg model lineup.

The world's most expensive cars for 2011

Okay. The money on these supercars would be better spent on feeding the needy or some other charity cause. But these aren’t just toys of the rich. They are more than just money spent on the owner’s own happiness. They are an investment. Despite millionaires everywhere taking a hit when the global economy took a slight turn for the worse, supercars have continued to make leaps and bounds in price. Why? Where normal investments have failed, investors that want their money to make money for them are now turning to things they can enjoy and get a slight return on in the long run. There is a risk, like any investment, of losing money but selective buyers of wine, art, guns, watches, and automobiles can enjoy as good or better returns than the stock market while at the same time gaining the enjoyment of owning such items.

As Tom duPont, publisher of duPont REGISTRY, recently told the Orlando Sentinel: "It's like playing the stock market.” If your collector car increases in value, great. But if it doesn't, "You'll have something you enjoy driving, or at least admiring."

Below is a list of the most expensive cars offered for 2011, with a limit of one per manufacturer:

Vying for the fastest production-car title

Top speed records are about as hot as Top Gear’s Powerlap times and Nürburgring track records and now that Bugatti Veyron Super Sport has officially taken the reigns as the world’s fastest production car, SCC and the previous record holder prior to the base Veyron, Koenigsegg, are both letting their intentions to beat the new Veyron Super Sport at its own game be known.

SSC with its “Because Life Begins at 250” slogan is preparing a new SSC Ultimate Aero to be shown in September that will potentially take back the title from the Halloween-colored supercar. You may also remember that the 2009 SSC Ultimate Aero was altered to produce more power and perform better aerodynamically although no new top speed runs were ever performed. At that time SSC estimated the Ultimate Aero's new top speed to be 270 mph.

Word from Top Gear is that Koenigsegg wants to reclaim the title after a five-year hiatus. No special model is being planned because Christian Von Koenigsegg believes the new Agera is capable of the feat.

A look back at duPont REGISTRY's Top 100 Cars of the Century

In 1999, the duPont REGISTRY held a survey where it asked its subscribers and the visitors to its web site to pick the 10 best cars of the century. Using those opinions, along with the picks from a number of notable persons like Mario Andretti, Don Panoz, Carroll Shelby, and Reggie Jackson, it compiled a list of the Top 100 Cars of the Century and dedicated a special book to its cause (in a way it was the precursor to our annual editorial-based Exotic Car Buyers Guide). The book hit newsstands before the turn of the century and was a great success. Today we are going to take a look back at that list and reminisce on what cars were picked and why and compare it to how those cars would probably rank exactly 10 years later.

Taking the number one spot on our top 100 list was the Lamborghini Diablo. Unveiled in production trim in Monte Carlo in January 1990, the Diablo was in its ninth year and still being produced at the time the book was written. We praised the “devil” for its “staggering 530 bhp from the…5.7-liter V-12,” and “0-60 mph acceleration under 4 seconds.” In the review we wrote “Lamborghini is rumored to be working on the next generation supercar. Though it’s hard to believe, they will create an automobile that will surpass our number one car in speed, power, and aerodynamic style.” Of course none of us knew the Lamborghini Murciélago was going to be so fast and so powerful and garnish as much admiration from the motoring public with its stout 580-hp 6.2-liter V-12 engine as it did. However, looking back, we can’t help but think that if a Lamborghini were to make the top ten list, shouldn’t it be the Lamborghini Countach? A model that has influenced the styling of all the company’s cars for the past 40 years.

Continue our look back at the top 100 cars of the last 100 years.
