Citing ease of use and convenience as its primary benefits, BMW is working with its technological-partner NXP to develop a key that would double as a debit or credit card. The secure contactless payment system and BMW key would be packaged together, making money readily accessible to pay for such things as parking, tolls, groceries, etc.
Security has been a big dilemma with these types of cards, since it transmits the card holder’s name, account number, etc. All a thief needs to do is get a hold of a card reader and walk past the person, collecting enough information to make a duplicate card. The other concern is that if the owner were to lose his car key, he would also lose easy access to one of his accounts.
BMW has not said if the card will look like a key or a card, but hopefully they don’t replicate the unsuccessful keyless go card that Mercedes-Benz used in the early 2000s, which was a little too thick to comfortably fit in a credit card slot in a wallet.
BMW has no plans at this point to produce the key.
