Carroll Shelby, Legendary King of Speed, Dead at 89

Carrol Shelby

Carroll Shelby, driver and automotive legend, died today, May 11, 2011, at the age of 89, due to complications from an illness. Rumor has it that he had been in the hospital for several weeks suffering from pneumonia. Throughout his childhood he suffered poor health but by his teenage years, his health had improved. After serving in World War II as a flight instructor and test pilot, he became a driver for companies such as Allard, Aston Martin, and Maserati. He actually won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Aston Martin in 1959, his last year of driving.

After driving, he began doing what he was ultimately known for, building various fast cars. He could take an ordinary automobile and reinvent it into something extraordinary. He will forever be remembered for his beautiful fast machines, charitable personality, and most importantly, his one-of-a-kind heart.

Review of the 2012 Fiat Abarth

2012 Fiat Abarth Front View

The 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth has turned the Fiat’s typical cutesy attitude into a mean little machine, living up to Carlo Abarth’s philosophy of making the ordinary extraordinary. This fierce Fiat could be some major competition for the Mini John Cooper Works and we’re intrigued to see the end result when these two actually face off. The Abarth is considered the Crème de la Crème of the Fiat 500 lineup and comes equipped with a 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged engine that can produce 160 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. The usual 5-speed transmission will stay the same but has been beefed up slightly to handle the small performance value the Abarth gives you.

2012 Fiat Abarth Interior

We all know it’s not just the speed that matters but also the stopping power which this Fiat needs to be able to stop on a dime. According to the manufacturer, this is made possible by its performance brake system. Our favorite thing about the performance side of this car is its power and how smooth the turbo kicked in. There was no turbo lag noticed whatsoever. The exhaust note was very throaty for such a little car and the acceleration was pretty good, coming in around 6.9 seconds. The one complaint we do have as far as the performance goes is that the manual transmission had a little too much play for our taste while shifting.

2012 Fiat Abarth Dash

We absolutely love the widebody look and the simple aero kit that came complete with a wing. We thought its badging looked pretty cool to and suited the little Fiat very nicely. It also had really nice gauges and we thought the color coordinated wheels added a nice, simple touch to the little car. As expected, the 2012 Fiat Abarth gets relatively good gas mileage, 28 for the city and 34 on the highway. Pricing starts out at $22,000.

Review of the 2012 SRX Crossover

In the world of lookalike crossovers, the 2012 SRX Crossover SUV has deliberately tried to stand apart. It now comes equipped with a bigger, more powerful engine, the same engine that’s offered in the Cadillac CTS sedan, the 3.6-liter V-6.

The new engine can produce 308 hop and 265 lb-ft of torque, capable of accelerating from 0-to-60 mph in around 7.5 seconds. The 2012 Cadillac SRX gets pretty good gas mileage considering it’s a SUV, and the EPA estimates its fuel efficiency is somewhere around 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway. The best thing about this Cadillac is that it does not require premium fuel. There are two options for the drivetrain, the standard front-wheel-drive and the optional all-wheel-drive.

The exterior received minor changes such as new machined-face 20-inch wheels. The interior got enhanced only slightly and includes Bluetooth connectivity as a standard plus an optional heated steering wheel. The interior provides a comfortable ride, which is to be expected from anything bearing the Cadillac name.

We did find that the headroom in the backseat was very limited space if you’re a tall person, despite the fact that you’re in a SUV. The 2012 Cadillac SRX starts out at $35,985, making it the least expensive in its class however it does seem to be lacking a lot of standard features we hoped to see in this year’s model. Even so, with that low of a base price, we consider this to be a good deal for the new and improved 2012 Cadillac SRX.

Review of the 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan

2012 VW Tiguan Front

The 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan received a few minor changes compared to the previous generation. You can choose from four different trim levels: S, LE, SE, SEL. The 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan is considered a small crossover SUV and is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 200 hp and 207 pound-feet of torque. This power is transferred through the standard 6-speed manual transmission or the optional 6-speed automatic that’s available. Minor engineering tweaks have resulted in better fuel economy for the front-wheel drive Tiguan, now claiming EPA estimates of 22 mpg city/27 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined.

Like most Volkswagens, the interior exemplifies the upmost quality available. We didn’t feel there was a lot of cargo space, which is something we want to see a lot of in a small crossover SUV. It is somewhat pricey compared to its competition like the Ford Escape or the Land Rover LR2 and for the its price you could probably find something a lot more roomier but if you’re a VW enthusiast and are in the market for a crossover, this might be the one for you! The S trim starts out at $22,840.

Review of the 2012 Toyota Prius C

2012 Toyota Prius C

The Toyota Prius has been quite successful despite the fact that it’s downright hideous. Regardless of this one fact, the engineers at Toyota have been trying to improve its looks every year and this year they may have been successful. We had the chance to review the smaller 2012 Toyota Prius C and here are our thoughts. This Prius uses the Hybrid Synergy Drive technology, which, consists of a small four-cylinder gas engine running on the Atkinson cycle, an electric motor, a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack, and a continuously variable transaxle.

2012 Toyota Prius C

Instead of the usual 1.8-liter four cylinder that we’re used to seeing in the Prius’s, the C has a 1.5-liter four cylinder and its battery pack now consist of 120 cells versus the usual 168 in order to get rid of 25 pounds. The Prius has a CVT transaxle that also contains the electric motor and is cooled by its own transmission fluid rather than by water, meaning it does not need a radiator.

2012 Toyota Prius C Engine

The 2012 Toyota Prius C is about 500 pounds lighter than the standard Prius but it gets about the same gas mileage of 50 mpg despite being smaller. The annual fuel cost will run you about $1,100, which means you will be spending about $92 a month or $23 a week in gas, which is one of the biggest reason we would choose to buy this hybrid car.

2012 Toyota Prius C Rear

The interior of the Prius C felt pretty roomy even though it’s the compact version of the standard Prius and the interior overall was pretty nice. This Prius C Four starts as low as $23,230 but the base model starts out at $18,950. If you’re looking for something relatively cheap to cruise around town with that won’t cost you much money on gas, than this Prius is the one for you.

Review of the 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Limited

2012 Subaru Impreza Limited Front

The Subaru Impreza has had some minor changes for 2012. Offered as both a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback, the 2012 Subaru Impreza drops its 170-hp 2.5-liter four cylinder engine for the new, smaller, and more economical 2.0-liter 148-hp four cylinder Boxer engine. It's less powerful, causing the acceleration times to rise to about 8.0 seconds compared to last year’s time of around 7.87 seconds.

The new engine does improve the Impreza’s fuel economy from 27 mpg highway for the 2011 model to 36 mpg highway for the 2012 on both CVT- and manual-equipped models. The gas mileage was a big selling point for us. The symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and five-speed manual transmission are standard across the entire line. The conventional automatic transmission is no longer an option. The Impreza had a lot of torque and revved pretty high but its shifting was smooth regardless of the clutch never feeling like it was engaged.

2012 Subaru Impreza F-4

Space has grown inside the new Subaru Impreza due to the slightly longer 104.1-inch wheelbase. The manufacturer also moved the car’s A-pillar a full 7.9 inches forward, increasing the front passenger room. Subaru will be offering five trim configurations; base, Premium, Sport Premium, Limited, and Sport Limited. The most luxurious model is the Sport Limited package, and it standard items are Leather trimmed upholstery, automatic climate control, and CVT with manual shift. Standard equipment for the Limited package comes with things such as the 17-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels. The Limited package starts at $21,895 and there are multiple factory upgrades for the Subaru race enthusiasts out there.
