Shelby displays Super Snake F-150 concept at SEMA

For those that are upset that Ford never built a Lightning for the 2004–2008 model years and aren’t ready to pony up for the upcoming Raptor truck, Shelby has the answer for you. Based off the first series of F-150s built on the P2 platform, the Shelby F-150 Super Snake carries the infamous Mustang moniker and utilizes a 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 that creates 475 hp. Brakes haven been upgraded to the six-piston variety, wheels and tires have both grown in size,  and the suspension has been stiffened and lowered by 3 inches. Outside you while find a new front fascia, side fenders, hood, carbon-fiber splitter, fender vents, brake cooling ducts, and “Shelby” and “Super Snake” badges;  amongst other upgrades throughout.

Competition for the Shelby package includes Ford’s own 450-hp supercharged Harley-Davidson Edition, the 450-hp Saleen S331 based off the F-150, and the 445-hp 500RC Roush F-150.

First Drive: Ferrari 458 Italia

Automotive journalists were given their first crack at the 458 Italia on Ferrari’s Fiorano test track in Maranello, Italy. The outcome, like when the F430 replaced the F360, is the new car has pulled off what seems like the impossible and has surpassed the old car by leaps and bounds.

First, the looks. Car and Driver doesn’t say the car is necessarily pretty, but justifies its design for the sake of better aerodynamics, noting that “like the oddly shaped Enzo, the 458 is meant to show off everything Ferrari has learned about airflow with its wing- and duct-bristled F1 cars, whether it’s pretty or not.” Automobile, on other hand, calls the car “drop-dead gorgeous.” Stating that catching the car on the street “will not just turn your head, it will make your head spin around like a top.”

The car’s drivetrain was unanimously praised. Automobile commended Ferrari for its “V-8 that revs, longingly, to an incredible 9,000 rpm,” while Car and Driver noted the engine’s throttle was easily modulated and comes with a “torque band so flat that it never runs away on you.”  Autoweek proclaimed that the “exhaust note is typical Ferrari magic, taking on a race-car-like pitch past 4,000 rpm and simply growing louder as the revs climb.”

The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is the only transmission offered but performs so well that most of the magazines doubted whether the manual transmission would even be missed.

The shocks are of the new magnetic-fluid variety and allow—due to their infinite, automatic, and instantaneous adjustability—the spring rate to be raised and the anti-rolls bars to be reduced, improving the car’s roll control without the ride penalties of big anti-roll bars. Motor Trend says the car “tracks remarkably true to the driver's intended path” and Automobile states the “steering is exceedingly well tuned. Perfectly weighted. Perfectly precise. Perfectly communicative. Perfect. Divinely perfect.” Everyone admired the car’s ability to make driving fast look and feel so easy.

Any complaints focused on the new interior, which is more driver focused. Automobile remarked that the driver’s surroundings “may come off as a little inelegant to some, especially the oddly shaped center protrusion from the instrument panel, which contains two air vents and a central controller for the electronic display.” Motor Trend also found fault on the car’s inside, pointing out that Ferrari has “succumbed to the multi-function mouse-knob mania now afflicting the entire auto industry,” and using the new controls are “about as intuitive as those on BMW's first crack at iDrive.” Autoweek had the most disparaging remarks about the ergonomics, calling the “entire concept…ill-conceived and downright gimmicky.”

Overall?

Motor Trend says the car “makes one question the superlatives one has so blithely applied to what now seem like much lesser vehicles. It makes the F430 seem like the model one graduates from when one's means at last permit purchase of the 458 Italia” and ends by saying that it promises “Enzo performance at 60 percent off. It's also one of the prettiest and best engineered supercars of this century."

Car and Driver notes that with the so many gs being forced on the body by the car’s acceleration, cornering, and braking abilities that any owner better pick passengers “carefully for their intestinal fortitude,” and ends by saying the Ferrari “has performance that race cars could once only dream of.”

Automobile remarks that the “level of performance and driving pleasure in the 458 Italia is nothing short of extraordinary, “ and that “Ferrari has, unquestionably, rewritten the rules once again for mid-engine sports cars."

Autoweek sums up the car by saying that “Ferrari has created a high-performance experience that does not feel at all contrived. With performance to match, the 458 Italia has set a new target for future mid-engined, V8-powered exotics.”

Dodge Viper dead, again.

Chrysler announced today, as a part of its restructuring, that it will be building 500 more special-edition Dodge Vipers before putting a halt to the car’s production. It was last May when Viper-death rumors originally started circulating after Chrysler couldn’t find a serious bidder for its V-10-powered car. Then in July, Chrysler announced that the Viper was not dead and that it would move into the next decade.

SLS Panamericana brings the SLS closer to the 300 SL

The new Mercedes-Benz SLS Gullwing draws on the good looks of the original 300 SL, but for those that want their new Merc to look more like the old Merc, Gullwing America has you covered.

Consisting of seven body parts, the 2010 Gullwing-America SLS Panamericana recreates the new Mercedes flagship in the same image as the infamous car of the 1950s but without taking away from the car’s modern appeal. The kit includes side vents, a grille frame, oval headlamps, and a set of rims, amongst other pieces.

For the people that can’t afford the new SLS or the old 300 SL, Gullwing America also makes reproductions that more closely resemble the car from the 50s but uses new Mercedes-Benz parts.

McLaren MP4-12C delayed due to dealer network

Insideline is reporting McLaren’s plans on selling the MP4-12C have been delayed because persuading dealers to sign up for what would be a one-horse dealership has been more difficult than originally thought.

**Update** In response to the above rumor, McLaren announced that if "discussions so far are anything to go by, we're not going to be short of people who want to retail the brand for us in the U.S." It also stated that it decided not to unveil the car at the Los Angeles Auto Show because it was too early considering the car's 2011 launch and not because the car was being delayed.

Ferrari agrees to one more Zagato

To celebrate 90 years of re-skinning Italian exotics, CarsUK.net is reporting that Zagato has teamed up with Ferrari to produce the 550 GTZ. Based off the Ferrari 550 Barchetta, five of these Z8-like-styling roadsters will be built at a price tag of more than £1 million ($1.65 million). Each car will be refurbished by Ferrari and then shipped to Zagato for the bodywork.

Performance will not be altered. It will use the same 5.5-liter 485-hp V-12 engine found in the base car.

Rumors have this being that last time a re-skinned Zagato will be able to work with Ferrari and thus wear the prancing-horse badges because Ferrari will be moving all customer customizations in-house.
