2011 BMW X5 with a ton of photos

BMW has released details and a massive amount of photos (it may even beat the overabundance of Grand Sport photos Bugatti released) of the new-for-2011 BMW X5. The changes for the double-uno year equate to a mild facelift, some added safety features, and a new line of engines. The top-dog model will now be called the xDrive50i—replacing the xDrive48i—and be powered by the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 that has been making its rounds throughout the BMW lineup. The new engine offering makes 400 hp and replaces the 350-hp 4.8-liter V-8 currently found in the X5. Read all about the new 2011 BMW X5 xDrive50i and view a plethora of photos in our News Center.

Lamborghini print ads

These are some of Lamborghini's print ads; something you will not find in the United States. The ads below are from three campaigns: One uses the slogan “A Part of Italy” and shows Lamborghini-like structures as just a part of Italy’s normal conurbation. The second group uses the phrase “Feels Italian. Wherever you are.” The third and final group of Lamborghini ads uses the motto “Welcome to Sant’ Agata Bolognese. Home of Lamborghini.” All these ads require a little bit of focus and brain power to understand. See more Lamborghini Ads here.

Ferrari CEO confirms upcoming models

In an interview with Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa, GoAuto was told what we can anticipate from the exotic-car brand in the future. He confirmed that a 458 Italia Spider will go on sale next year, a 599 Hybrid will be unveiled at Geneva—something chairman Luca di Montezemolo has already told us, that a lighter and more-powerful 599 GTB Fiorano GTO is on the way but a 458 Italia “Scuderia” is not currently in the works, and that an Enzo replacement will be making its debut soon as a left-hand-drive-only supercar.

Felisa also went into detail on the how hybrid technology will integrate into the Ferrari model line:

“The test mule has been running for a year now and it will reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 25 percent. We will present the new concept of the hybrid at Geneva. It will be based on the 599, but that doesn’t mean it will debut on that model. We have a plan to introduce new technology on our cars that will reduce consumption and emissions. The next step is to apply the technology on Ferrari cars.

The technology is not ready. The suppliers are not ready. Everything is underdeveloped. There is a lot of work to so. It is not for tomorrow. We haven’t decided when it will be introduced. It will be around that period 2015, but not before five years. The new hybrid technology can be applied to all Maranello’s sports cars, including those that are front- or mid-engined or fitted with V8- or V12-engines. If we move on the hybrid I think the technology is applicable on all our models.

The first production fuel-saving technology will debut on the California in 2011. If you couple direct-injection with other technology a fuel consumption and emissions reduction of up to 15 per cent is possible. Then there is cylinder deactivation, stop-start, electric motors for certain functions, we will launch the first of these on the California next year.”

Man holds back Shelby Mustang and Lamborghini

Is there any car that Franz Müllner cannot hold back? A new video brought to you by National Geographic's Humanly Impossible shows the Austrian’s incredible feat of strength—although it may be partly due to great stength of feet—as he holds back a Mustang GT500 while it performs a wicked peel out.

You may remember this same man performing a similar act with a Lamborghini Diablo more than one year ago.

Tesla plans to go public

Tesla filed paperwork with the SEC last Friday for an initial public offering that it hopes will allow it to raise $100 million. In the paperwork, Tesla states that it is not yet financially viable but hopes to get there with the innovative and technology-advanced Tesla Model S. The paperwork also notes that Tesla has lost $236 million since 2003.

Inside the SEC’s petition Tesla also states that it will cease production of its Roadster model in 2011 because of “planned tooling changes at a supplier for the Tesla Roadster.” So we can presume that someone was providing something that obviously Tesla cannot obtain from anyone else.

So the money raised if Tesla goes public would be used to put the Tesla Model S on track for production in 2012 and a Roadster replacement in 2013. This means 2011 will be a very important year for Tesla. It is a year that Tesla will not be producing any cars, will be under high design and production costs, and will have no revenue coming in. Even Tesla admits that it will be walking a thin line, stating it has “a history of losses," and it can "expect significant increases in our costs and expenses to result in continuing losses for at least the foreseeable future." The scariest part is Tesla knows it will continue to "incur operating and net losses until at least the time we begin significant deliveries of the Model S" but also states later that it "may experience significant delays in the design, manufacture, launch and financing of the Model S.”

So either 2011 will be a great year to get in on the gound level of an up and coming electric-vehicle manufacturer or that year will result in the Tesla brand being laid to rest. Kind of reminds us of those early Tesla deathwatch rumors. If you are looking to invest with Tesla, we suggest reading the entire SEC filing below.

Video: Viper loses it on track

The video shows a Dodge Viper hitting a long straight and then either coming into the corner too hot or, as the beginning of the video suggests, finding out that the brakes were no longer operable.

Proof that alcohol and fast cars can cohabitate

Let's just say that this is the only way that the two should be in juxtaposition. Tresalia Capital has bought the rights to the Artega, a small German exotic car manufacturer that has set production of its Artega GT car to later this year. Tresalia Capital has held a minor stake in the company since October 2008. Tresalia Captial also owns part of Grupo Modelo, which manufactures Corona beer—a common misconception is that Anheuser-Busch produces Cornoa but it actually only distributes the beer through its wholesale system—along with 11 other beer brands.

The Artega GT was penned by Henrik Fisker. Power will come from a Volkswagen-sourced 3.6-liter V-6 making 300 hp. Zero-to-60 mph should take less than five seconds and the car is capable of a top speed of 167 mph.

Ferrari confirms hybrid is on way

Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo announced yesterday that a 599 Hybrid will debut at the Geneva Motor Show and will see production. This may upset some hardcore Ferrari fans, but is a road we all saw coming. Ferrari filed patents for a new type of hybrid technology in mid-2009 and announced soon after that it would be using hybrid technology in the future. Our outlook is that hybrid technology will become a part of every car in some way in the near future to help lower emissions, increase performance, and cut fuel consumption.
