The last Pontiac we got remotely excited about had a screamin’ chicken on the hood and Burt Reynolds behind the wheel. Early next year, Pontiac showrooms will be filled with the V-8 thunder of a brand-new, rear-drive sports sedan, the G8. While it sounds like something world leaders might attend in Calcutta, the car is actually the first application of GM’s new global rear-drive platform that’s been developed by GM’s Aussie subsidiary, Holden. You’ll also see it in the upcoming Chevy Camaro. Powered by a six-liter ’Vette-derived motor packing 362-hp, the G8 is designed to lock horns with Dodge’s bad-boy Charger in the $30- to $40-grand slice of the enthusiast market. With fenders that bulge bigger than Stallone’s biceps and enough scoops and spoilers to open a tuner shop, the G8 grabs lots of attention. And with Holden’s long experience in making big, rear-drive sedans go really fast, this new Pontiac should be a fun drive.
