That little spec box that contains everything from the price to the 0–60 time below every car we write about is not always easy to fill. There are times the manufacturer provides the exact figure; other times, we don’t have a clue. Asking the firm's public relations office won’t always provide us with any answers, if it responds at all. It’s times like this that we have to estimate. Using what we have learned in our time covering the industry and any other clues we can find, we try our best to provide an accurate figure. Sometimes we are close, while other times we are, well, not too far off. We won’t lie: there have been times when we are amazed at how spot-on our estimates came out to be after the official specifications were released.

One such figure is the price for the 2012 Ferrari 458 Spider. This one wasn’t too difficult really. We just looked at the percent increase between the 2010 2009 430 coupe and the 2010 2009 430 Spider and applied it to the price of the 2011 458 Italia coupe. It gave us a rounded figure of $260,000, not too far from the $257,000 base MSRP that we learned today.
