Rolls-Royce sues replica golf-cart manufacturer

In a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Courts last week, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is suing Michael Hruby, owner and operator of Luxury Carts of Hawaii, for selling golf carts that use Rolls-Royce trademarks. Rolls-Royce holds the trademarks to such items as the Rolls-Royce logo, Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament, and “Phantom” name. The lawsuit alleges that Mr. Hruby has continued to manufacture, sell, and make commercial use of products bearing trademarked items despite a promise to stop after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from the luxury brand.

Luxury Carts of Hawaii’s web site, luxurycarts.com, lists custom golf carts designed to look like Cadillac Escalades, Lamborghinis, Bentleys, Hummers, and more and costing anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000.
