RM will be offering not one but two 1969 L88 Corvettes at its Classic Muscle and Modern Performance auction in San Diego, California, on June 19. A Riverside Gold Coupe is one of 17 produced with an automatic transmission that year. The second comes in Monza Red and is one of the last L88 Corvettes ever built. In total only 216 Corvettes were built with the L88 option: 20 in 1967, 80 in 1968, and 116 in 1969.
The L88 is a racing package offered from 1967 to 1969. Sporting more than 500 hp—though GM only advertised 430 hp—and a plethora of other go-fast bits, the L88 was designed specifically for track use. The L88 used a 427 very similar to the L71 option at the time (or at least very similar on paper), but was nearly twice the price. More expensive and shroud in mystery, the L88 could be purchased by anyone, although GM was pushing it to race teams. The rarest of the L88s are the 20 units built for 1967. Bidding for one of those has gone as high as $1,550,000 in 2007, but did not sell because it failed to hit the reserve.
