Mercedes-Benz is testing a prototype braking device that will stop itself at red lights. At a smart intersection that communicates with the automobile, Mercedes demonstrated that the car will warn the driver of an upcoming red light if the brakes are not being used. If the driver still fails to touch the brakes as the auto closes in on the intersection, the car will go into “Automatic Stop” mode and bring the car to a halt.
Mercedes-Benz admits that this technology is still quite far from being put into actual production cars. There is still a quite a bit of tinkering to do with the actual device and, at taxpayers’ expense, it would require every stoplight in the country to be upgraded.
