Koenigsegg to buy Saab from GM

Koenigsegg, a Swedish car manufacturer, is close to sealing a deal to buy Saab, another Swedish car brand, from General Motors. Despite Saab selling 93,000 cars in 2008 and Koenigsegg selling only 20, Saab is losing money and Koenigsegg is not.

So why is Koenigsegg buying Saab? Some speculate that a Swiss company called NLV Solar AG is joining in the deal with the intent of building electric cars with Koenigsegg at the Saab factory in Trollhattan. One such car could be the Quant concept, a four-seat electric-powered solar car that Koenigsegg displayed at the Geneva Motor Show.

*Update* Documents made public today show that Koenigsegg Automotive AB has applied to start a new company named the Koenigsegg Group, fueling speculation that GM and Koenigsegg have ironed out the details on the purchase.

**UPDATE** Word is that the Koenigsegg has pulled out of the deal to buy Saab from GM.
