Bentley is celebrating the 50th birthday of its now iconic 6.75-liter V-8 engine. Although the engine’s 530 hp is only considered adequate in today’s luxury marketplace, the engine’s 774 lbs-ft of torque still blows away most of the competition. Some clamor was made in the late 90s when the engine was replaced, due to its bad emissions and its track record of always being in the cars that make the worst-fuel-economy lists, with a BMW-sourced engine. However, customer complaints with the new BMW engine’s power and demands for the old engine quickly brought the 6.75-liter V-8 back to the marketplace.
The six-and-three-quarter-liter engine, as people inside Bentley refer to it, has been around for over 50 years, yet has managed to not lag behind today’s industry standards.
"Today's engine is true to the original design.” said John Lowe from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, “It has achieved power and torque increases of over 150 percent through the skilful introduction of fuel injection, turbocharging and intercooling technologies whilst remaining compliant with the latest emissions standards.”
