Rolls-Royce Phantom Year of the Dragon sold out 2 months after debut

Rolls Royce Phantom Year of the Dragon Edition

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Year of the Dragon edition we told you about earlier is now officially sold out after its announced just two months ago. These $1.2-million special-edition Phantoms are absolutely perfect for China, which was Rolls-Royce’s largest market in 2011, accounting for about one-third of the car sales worldwide according to China Daily. Rolls-Royce seems to be the first, but we doubt the last, auto brand to make the dragon a main part of its design in order to draw Chinese customers celebrating the Year of the Dragon; since this event occurs every 12 years, luxury brands only have a short time to cash in on this dragon extravaganza.

22-year old grabs first Aventador for extra $71,000

A 22-year-old engineering graduate, Dhiaa Al-Essa, became the first person in Saudi Arabia to take delivery of the new 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. To bypass the car’s 18-month waiting list, the youth reportedly paid an additional $71,000 on top of the car’s $387,000 base price. Obviously, Al-Essa is not tight on cash, which may have a lot to do with the £1.5-billion estimated worth of his family.

The Lamborghini is just one of many exotic supercars that Al-Essa owns, which looks like a laundry list of the latest and greatest and includes a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, Koenigsegg Agera, Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe, Rolls-Royce Phantom sedan, Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, Ferrari F430, Ferrari 599 GTO, Ferrari 458 Italia, Ferrari California, Porsche 997 GT3 RS, Porsche 997 Turbo Spyder, Bentley Continental GT, Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG, Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG, BMW M5, BMW X6M, BMW X5M, Audi R8, and Maybach 62. His collection has an estimated value of $12 million.

Which car does Al-Essa like the most? According to an article posted on Metro.co.uk in 2010 before he acquired at least the Koenigsegg and the Aventador, his favorite ride was the Mercedes SLR McLaren because of the way it looks and drives and its reliability.

Maybach axed for 2013 Mercedes S-Class

Maybach death rumors have been swirling for quite so time, but it finally appears that Mercedes-Benz is ready to axe the luxury brand due to stagnant sales. Daimler AG says the Maybach brand will be discontinued by 2013 and replaced by a stretched version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

The demise of the resuscitated brand is easy to understand. Maybach delivered 33 cars in the United States in the first 10 months of 2011, a drop of 28 percent compared to the same period in 2010. As a comparison, Rolls-Royce and Bentley delivered 286 and 1,422 vehicles, respectively, for the same region and period.

The move means the S-Class lineup, which will be undergoing a redesign for 2013, will expand out to include six variations of the flagship sedan. One will include an elongated wheelbase (think S600 Pullman without the armor) while a four-door convertible variant is also being rumored.

Report: Exotic manufacturers' sales numbers

Toyota sold 327,804 Camrys in America in 2010, the most of any single car model. More than 250,000 Honda Civics and nearly 220,000 Ford Fusions were sold in the same period. The most prolific exotic cars pale in comparison with these numbers and this was a good year for many. In fact, most mainstream manufacturers sell more of a single model than any single exotic-car range. Exceptions are the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which sold 919 units; Mazda RX-8 with 1,134 cars; Audi TT, which sold 1,531 vehicles; and Toyota Land Cruiser with 1,807 autos. Here is the list of the top exotic car manufacturers in terms of cars sold in America in 2010:

  1. Maserati (1,987)
  2. Ferrari (1,440)
  3. Bentley (1,430)
  4. Aston Martin (1,104)
  5. Lotus (660)
  6. Lamborghini (324)
  7. Rolls-Royce (312)
  8. Maybach (63)
Are the manufacturers faring better this year? Yes. As of May, the year-to-date sales figures are up from 2010 by 24% for Maserati, 22.4% for Ferrari, 16.3% for Bentley, 16.5% for Lamborghini, and 31.8% for Rolls-Royce. Maybach is the only one that is hurting with a drop of 34.5% to just 19 vehicles sold so far in 2011.

Flash floods in Singapore leave exotics submerged

Ferrari and Lambo in flood in Singapore

A flash flood in a major shopping district of Mount Elizabeth, Singapore, not only left the local mall engulfed in water but also an exotic-car collection worth millions of dollars submerged in a parking garage. The estimated value of the damage is especially high considering the cost of car ownership for Singaporeans. The cause behind the flooding is not known but this is not the first time the area has become flooded following heavy rainstorms.

Rolls-Royce Provenance pre-owned program for U.K. buyers

Rolls-Royce is turning to certified pre-owned program to entice reluctant U.K. buyers. The Rolls-Royce Provenance program will offer a minimum 24-month warranty including free service and 24-hour roadside assistance. The warranty does not include wear and tear items such as the tires, paint and trim, or battery. To meet the program’s standards, the vehicles will endure a full inspection including a road test. Rolls-Royce will even be researching the vehicle’s maintenance history and dismissing any vehicles that did not follow Rolls-Royce recommended maintenance schedule with the former owner(s). No word if the program will be making it stateside.

Would you pay $68,000 for a Roll-Royce-inspired Mini Cooper?

Mini Inspired by Goodwood

Mini and Rolls-Royce have teamed up to create the Mini Inspired by Goodwood, a Mini Cooper with the type of lavish interior you would normally expect to find in a Rolls-Royce motor car. It may seem a bit bizarre that one of the most elite automobile brands in the world would team up with a low-budget brand like Mini, until you realize that both were most likely driven together by their parent-company BMW. Starting with a Mini Cooper S, Rolls-Royce has added its expertise to give the three-door hatchback a lavish interior with a few exterior upgrades.

Mini says the Mini Inspired by Goodwood features top-grade materials and a high level of workmanship. The dashboard and door-handle surfaces are finished in Walnut Burr, a wood that was formerly exclusive to Rolls-Royce. A black nappa leather dashboard, leather door linings, and Piano Black buttons on the steering wheel and center console provide additional accents. Floor mats with a deep-pile lamb-wool quality, another Rolls-Royce trademark, cover the floorboards. The exterior receives the Rolls-Royce treatment as well, with a Rolls-Royce exclusive Diamond Black metallic paint and 17-inch wheels sporting a multi-spoke design.

The Mini Inspired by Goodwood will cost 46,900 Euros, or approximately $68,000, and will be limited to 1,000 units. At first glance, paying $68,000 for a Mini Cooper may seem absurd. But is it any less absurd to pay $31,000 for the smaller and less powerful Aston Martin Cygnet? A product based off a Toyota. Maybe the Aston Martin Cygnet is the first in a new line of small low-budget automobiles that will carry some big brand names. If that is the case, the Mini Inspired by Goodwood’s only problem is that it doesn’t carry the Rolls-Royce moniker. Paying $68,000 for a Mini Cooper may be absurd to some, but paying the same for a new low-budget Rolls-Royce based off a Mini Cooper may have just the right amount of panache to do well.

Bentley and Rolls-Royce both looking for new apprentices

The two most elite luxury car manufacturers in the entire world are looking for young and talented individuals to become future master artisans. The opportunity not only allows the companies to hand select individuals for its future workforce, but gives students the opportunity to hone their craft and begin their career path.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is looking for a fresh batch of applicants between the ages of 16–24 years of age for its 2011 apprenticeship program. If accepted, these individuals will work alongside the company’s artisans in the paint, wood, leather, engineering, and business departments. The apprenticeship lasts for up to four years with an ultimate goal of acquiring new talented individuals to work for the luxury car manufacturer. In 2010, 35 young men and women were employed with the company for durations ranging from six to 12 months; Rolls-Royce hopes even more positions will be needed this year.

Bentley Motors recently opened its doors to a one-day open house for those seeking to join its program. Bentley will be accepting applications up to May 16, 2011 to fill 20 open spots. Bentley is currently looking for people to work in its craft, technical, junior engineering, and commercial and business fields. Applicants will follow a two-, three-, or four-year course program depending on the subject. Like Rolls-Royce, Bentley’s program works in conjunction with local colleges to provide students with hand-on and study-based training.

Yes, the Rolls-Royce Ghost CAN drift!

Most will say that drifting a Rolls-Royce is impossible, absurd, and simply offensive to the brand. Powered by a 6.6-liter twin-turbocharged V-12 that that can put down an impressive 575 lb-ft of torque, the Rolls-Royce Ghost, although extremely heavy at nearly 5,400 pounds, is powerful enough to induce an everlasting drift. Are you ready to see $250,000 sliding around a track? If you think you can handle it, hit the jump to read more and check out the video!
