Koenigsegg Agera R is the stop-and-go master

Koenigsegg Agera R

On September 2, 2011, the Koenigsegg Agera R set the current record in the Guinness World Records for the fastest time for a two-seater production car to travel 0–186–0 mph. The feat, conducted at an airfield near Angelholm, Sweden, was accomplished in 21.9 seconds by Robert Serwanski. Guinness World Records confirms that this is a new record, making Koenigsegg’s Agera R the first titleholder.

In addition, Koenigsegg attempted to set five other Guinness World Records. All the records were related to accelerating and decelerating at speeds between 186 and 200 mph:

• 0–186 mph = 14.53 seconds

• 0–200 mph = 17.68 seconds

• 186–0 mph = 6.66 seconds

• 200–0 mph = 7.28 seconds

• 0–200–0 mph = 24.96 seconds

For comparison, Bugatti says the 1,200-hp Veyron Super Sport takes 14.60 seconds to reach 186 mph from a standstill (0.07 of a second slower than the Agera R) and 22.5 seconds to go 0–186–0 mph (1.31 seconds slower than the Agera R).

The Koenigsegg is powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine that delivers a total of 1,115 hp on E85 bioethanol . Koenigsegg says the Agera R has a theoretical top speed of 275 mph. Christian von Koenigsegg was thrilled that the Agera R received this acknowledgement, stating, “We had high hopes when we set out to do this record. But, the end result was truly astonishing. This is Koenigsegg´s 4th Guinness World Record since 2003, and it shows our continued commitment to build hypercars that deliver beyond expectations.”

Utah man wrecks Lamborghini hours after winning it

David Dopp Lambo Winner

David Dopp—a Frito-Lay truck driver, resident of the small town of Santaquin in Utah, and father of five—won big, or so he thought.

Last week, a “Joe Schmo to Lambo” contest sponsored by Maverik convenience stores and Teamgive, a not-for-profit organization, declared David Dopp the winner of an eye-popping lime-green 2010 Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster, estimated to be worth more than $350,000. In addition to the sports car, Dopp also won driving lesson worth $5,000.

Unfortunately, Dopp, crashing the Italian exotic mere hours after taking delivery on Saturday, may no longer need those lessons.

This story starts when Dopp was first given the keys to his new 632-hp ride. According to a message Dopp posted on Facebook before the crash, Santaquin Police contacted him because residents were complaining that he was driving too fast. Then, approximately six hours after Dopp acquired the Lamborghini, the police were called again, but this time because Dopp had crashed the car.

As Dopp told police, he was coming around a corner, hit a patch of black ice or gravel, and the car slid out of control. The car came to rest about 75 feet off the road. Dopp admitted to going 40 to 50 mph in the 35-mph zone, and police confirmed the crash was speed related. The car was sent to Las Vegas, Nevada, to be repaired. The crash caused damages to the oil pan and bumpers and numerous scratches.

Jalopnik claims that this crash might have been on purpose. It says that a close friend of Dopp contacted the web site and said the car was totaled in order to collect $300,000 insurance payout. Jalopnik reasons that since Dopp had to put his house up as collateral for the insurance and taxes, which could have exceeded $100,000, he must have ultimately been planning to wreck the Lamborghini and collect the insurance money. It also points to a post Dopp put on Jay Leno’s Facebook page asking for help with selling the car.

We think that Dopp simply wanted to enjoy his new toy before he was forced to get rid of it.

According to the Associated Press, Dopp is going to have the car repaired, and then he will try to sell it.

"I already had offers on it. I'm going to sell it," David Dopp said Wednesday. "I have bills more important than a Lamborghini. I've got a family to support."

Model cars based on Ralph Lauren's real collection will sell for $9,500

Ralph Lauren 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa

Ralph Lauren is offering miniature car models based on the amazing real-life car collection owned by the man behind the brand.

These limited-edition 1:8-scale replicas are said to be exact to one-tenth of a millimeter. To produce such accurate imitations, each car was digitally scanned and more than 3,000 hours were invested creating the master molds. Another 350 man-hours were spent assembling, painting, detailing, and polishing each model.

Being marketed as a last minute gift idea for the classic-car lover, the four different models are based on some of Ralph Lauren's rarest and best-known cars: his 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, 1938 Bugatti 57 S/C Atlantic, and 1996 McLaren F1 LM. Each model is offered for $9,500.

Dodge and Viper part ways

Two facts become clear when you read the press release from Chrysler regarding the next Viper being built in Detroit: the 2013 Viper is very close to being introduced, and it will drop the Dodge logo for the new SRT nameplate. That’s right; it will just be called the SRT Viper from now on. This will assumingly give the SRT group a lot more room to play with the American sport car. It has also been reported that there will be “no parts sharing with the two Fiat Group premium sports-car brands, Maserati or Ferrari,” according to Dan Reid, Chrysler’s spokesperson. That means that the iconic American sports car will remain as authentic as possible, all the way down to being produced in Motor City.

Back in August, Chrysler announced the separation of SRT from Dodge to form a unique high-performance brand. Currently, the SRT brand features four vehicles: Dodge Challenger SRT8, Dodge Charger RT8, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, and Chrysler 300 SRT8. Unlike the Viper, the four aforementioned cars will still wear the badges of their respective nameplates.

There have been no reports to the actual reason behind the Viper dropping the Dodge name. It is rumored that it may have something to do with the recent CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulations, or maybe it’s because of the more badge-conscious market. Either way, we don’t think we will have to worry about SRT making this vehicle any less worthy of its name because anything that carries the SRT insignia usually turns out pretty badass!

Bentley says the W-12 will continue, Flying Spur gets neglect

Despite the premiere of the new 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 variant, Bentley says that the W-12 engine will continue to be a staple in the Continental lineup. The new smaller V-8 engine produces 500 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque, only 67 hp and 29 lb-ft of torque less than the W-12-powered car, while requiring 40 percent less fuel. These new figures combined with a lower asking price may spur sales in the coupe and convertible, but, obviously, Bentley doesn’t think it is good enough to compete with its customers’ needs for bountiful power reserves.

We also asked about the aging Flying Spur, which was not mentioned in the V-8 cars' press release. Bentley confirmed that, as of right now, the Flying Spur will stick with only the W-12 engine. We tried to learn more about what fate lies ahead for the Flying Spur; unfortunately, Bentley refused to comment on how or when (or even if) it will be updated.

Jermaine Dupri sued for unpaid Lamborghini bills totaling $80,000

Jermaine Dupri Lamborghini

Premier Financial Services—the same organization that worked with Lamborghini to provide low-cost leases—is suing Record Producer Jermaine Dupri Mauldin for the money owed on a 2005 Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster. Premier Financial Services loaned Mauldin $330,000 in 2006 in return for 58 monthly payments of $4,323. Mauldin made payments totaling more than $135,000, including a $70,000 down payment, but suddenly stopped in 2009. Premier Financial Services repossessed the car and sold it for $115,000, leaving Mauldin with a $79,095 tab, which Premier Financial Services is now suing to obtain.

Jermaine Dupri, as he is best identified, is famous for launching the careers of Kris Kross, Da Brat, Jagged Edge, and Lil’ Bow Wow and working with Usher, Mariah Carey, and other well-known artists.

2012 Lotus Exige to come to U.S. as track car for $85–$90K

2012 Lotus Exige

Lotus was forced to axe the Lotus Elise and Exige from the U.S. lineup due to the expiration of a smart-airbag exemption and the discontinuance of its Toyota-derived 1.8-liter motor. After producing a couple farewell packages, Lotus unveiled a revised Exige S for the European marketplace that features a Lotus Evora S-derived 3.5-liter supercharged V-6 producing 345 hp—nearly 100 more horsepower than the Exige S260. It appears the Europeans won’t get all the fun as Lotus has confirmed with us that the new Exige will be coming stateside as a track-only car featuring full roll cage, racing seats and harness, electrical cut-off switch, et cetera and will be priced in the area of $85,000–$90,000.

Despite being 300 pounds heavier than its predecessor, the new Exige S is expected to get to 60 mph from a stop in as little as 3.8 seconds and hit a top speed around 170 mph. This is a few ticks of the stopwatch faster in the zero-to-60-mph time and a massive 20 mph faster in top speed compared to the outgoing car. In addition, the car also features a Dynamic Performance Management (DPM) system with three distinct driving modes: Touring, Sport, and stability control off. We also anticipate the Race Pack function to come stateside, offering a launch control system and optimized track-suspension setting for better traction out of corners.

Ferrari celebrates 60 years of F1 with 599 GTB 60F1

Ferrari 599 GTB 60F1 front

Ferrari is offering a special 599 GTB called the 599 GTB 60F1 to commemorate the company’s 60 years of Formula One. The 599 GTB 60F1 is based on the Handling GT Evoluzione (HGTE) package and will come in three different color palettes designed to honor two specific racing wins. The 375 F1 livery is the same dark red color as Froilan Gonzalez's 375 F1 when he brought home the trophy at the 1951 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Ferrari 150° Italia and Ferrari 150° Italia 2 celebrate Fernando Alonso's win this summer at Silverstone. Ferrari 150° Italia features the Scuderia 2011 red used on the Ferrari 150° Italia racecar. Formula One White accents are used on hood stripes, front apron, a design behind the front wheels, and stretching up the A-pillars and down the C-pillars. It also features the Italian flag’s colors on a small strip that runs the below the lip of the trunk lid. The Ferrari 150° Italia 2 limits the white accent to the lower bumper and drops the tricolor on the rear.

All 599 GTB 60F1s will feature satin-finished aluminum gas cap, 20-inch diamond-finished ally rims, and Scuderia Ferrari shields on the front quarter panels.

The seats in the 599 GTB 60F1 are by Recaro for the American version and are upholstered in Alcantara with SuperFabric inserts. The seats feature a Ferrari logo stitched into the headrests, and four-point safety harnesses dressed in red and blue. The instrument panel is trimmed in matte-finish Alutex—an aluminum glass fiber material—and features a silver commemorative plaque with the signatures of both Gonzalez and Alonso.

The 599 GTB 60F1 is based on the HGTE handling package. Ferrari says it provides tighter handling, sharper cornering, and improved responsiveness while still being easy to drive. To accomplish this, Ferrari added stiffer springs and rear anti-roll bar as well as new calibration settings for the magnetorheological shock absorbers when the manettino is at its sportier settings. The ride height was also been lowered. The package also includes specifically optimized tires featuring a compound that offers even better grip.
